Examples of this type of essay include questions which ask you to take a position on a topic, such as a particular decision or policy, and present arguments which support your position. An effective way to argue a point can be to present the opposing view first then counter this view with stronger evidence. This is designed to orientate the reader and provide them with some sort of context beforehand. It is absolutely critical to prepare your reader with this type of background information-do not immediately launch into your argument. Let’s imagine then, that we have spent some time and worked on our first draft of our essay and have written the introduction to the essay question. We will try to make it clearer for you by actually using a sample introduction that was written for a real-life academic essay. As you research your essay topic, search for this story of surprise, and don’t start writing until you can find it. However, toward the end of my time as a student, I made a breakthrough.
